According to historical records, Ambala was formed as a district in 1847, during British rule. It had six sub districts at the time: Ambala, Jagadhri, Ropar, Kharad, Narayangarh, and Nalagarh. The district's headquarters are at Ambala City. Ambala is thought to have been discovered by a Rajput named "AMB'' in the 14th century, and the city was named after him. Another theory concerning the city's name is that it was named "Ambala Bhavani '' after "AMBA," whose temple is still standing in the city today. Ambala was originally a part of Ambala or Amb village, according to a third theory ( Village of Mangos ). Ambala Cantt is the administrative centre of Ambala. It's an important intersection. The railway lines between Delhi and Kalka, as well as Saharanpur and Ludhiana, run through here. G.T. Ambala Cantt is also traversed by road.

In the year 1843, this Cantt. was founded. Ambala Cantt. is a major manufacturing centre for scientific and medical instruments. Kalka is the administrative centre of the district of Ambala, and it is located on the Ambala-Shimla national route. This is the Himachal Pradesh border. The present-day Kalka was once part of the Patiala kingdom, but after being captured by the British in 1846, it was added to the Shimla region. Kalka was incorporated into the district of Ambala in 1899. The famed Kali Devi temple is located here, and fairs are conducted every year in the months of March and April. Narayan Garh is the administrative centre of the district of Ambala's subdivision and division.
