Rishikesh's origins can be traced back to the mythological state of Kedarkhand (Garhwal region). Rama is said to have done devotion here for defeating Ravana. Lord Vishnu, delighted by Ram, revealed to him in the form of Hrishikesh. It is from here that Rishikesh gets its name. Indrakund, which flourished in Rishikesh, is also mentioned in the Skanda Purana's Kedar Khand.
According to legend, Lakshman Jhula spanned the Ganges River with a jute rope. In 1889, the jute bridge was rebuilt with an iron bridge. It was preceded by the floods of 1924, which wiped away the bridge. It was reconstructed once again by the modern bridge, which is more stronger.
