Education in schools in India is governed by multiple boards of education including ICSE (Indian Certificate for Secondary Education), CBSE (Central Board for Secondary Education), SSC (Secondary School Certificate) and IB (International Baccalaureate).

CBSE Schools in India are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. The board conducts examinations at 10th and 12th standard level. CBSE follows a common syllabus and curriculum that is followed by all its affiliates across the country. There are approximately 20,299 schools in India and 220 schools in 28 foreign countries affiliated to the CBSE. All the schools affiliated to National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) previously known as National Open School (NOS) are also affiliated to CBSE. Unlike the ICSE, the CBSE does not have any school-based curriculum or syllabus. The syllabus is uniform across all schools under the CBSE board which covers entire Primary Education, Secondary Education and Senior Secondary Education.

CBSE schools give importance to co-curricular activities along with academics. They organize various events, competitions, workshops and seminars that help students to learn new skills outside their curriculum. In order to enhance their speaking and writing skills students are encouraged to participate in debates, group discussions and extempore speech competitions.
