The city has a hospital, a government metalworks institute, and numerous colleges associated with Kurukshetra University, and was established as a municipality in 1867.

A lush alluvial plain makes up the majority of the surrounding area. Grain, gramme (chickpeas), cotton, sugarcane, peanuts (groundnuts), and mangoes are the main crops, with some canal irrigation. To the southeast is one of India's largest military cantonments, which also includes a commercial centre and an airfield.
